The educational facilities from elementary to higher education are available in the Saran district. The district has a state university “Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya (University)” at district headquarters Chhapra. The university is named after a great freedom fighter and politician Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as Loknayak. The Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1990, to cater the educational needs of people belonging to the Saran division and since then the university is imparting under graduate and post graduate courses in most of the educational streams.

 Courses:

Three-Year Degree Programmes: The Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya imparts 3-Year Degree Programmes of general education streams in the disciplines of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, and Commerce at Honours and General level. The University Grant Commission (U. G. C.) has permitted for the Functional Hindi (Honours) and Industrial Fish and Fisheries (Honours) programmes in Rajendra College, Chapra and Ganga Singh College, Chapra respectively. Besides these courses, the university offers 3-year degree course in Law at Chhapra.

The university is conducting the B.C.A. (Bachelor of Computer Application) of three years duration through distance education mode.
